In the s, UC archaeologist Carl Blegen led the second of three major excavations that have dug at Troy. That Troy legend, in brief, holds that in about B. The Greeks then laid siege to Troy, but were only able to subdue it, after ten years of warfare, via trickery. They built a large, hollow, wooden horse as a supposed gift to Athena, goddess of war, and then hid inside the horse. The Trojans dragged the horse into their own city so that they themselves might possess this gift to Athena and thus accrue any benefits it might bring.
The reality of Troy is, well, a horse of a different color than what Hollywood will likely show us or even, in some cases, what Homer encapsulates in his adventure epic. The documentary will air at 9 p. Below is a roundup of some of the fact vs. Battle scene from a sarcophagus found about an hour’s drive east of Troy and dating from about B. Troy was often destroyed and rebuilt, subject as it was to raids and wars, due to its important — and accessible — coastal position controlling the straits between the Aegean and the Black seas, which probably allowed it to grow very rich from trade.

I can speak from personal experience here, because I am that family that needs affordable places to live in Davis if we are going to be able to stay here. I urge Council to direct City Staff to clarify that new multi-family projects need to be predominately, if not entirely 1,2, and 3- bedroom traditional apartments offering market rental housing for all. Non-college students are looking for shared housing.
Especially if they are young and not married. I do agree that these projects are not conducive for families. Right now the shortfall of housing is forcing students into single-family homes which are rented, and has choked families out of the market. By providing housing for students, the overall rental vacancy rate will be increased and therefore housing will be more available to families attempting to move into town.
But today I want to go further than this. I do not generally personalize politics in Davis, but I do find it ironic that many of the people making these arguments are folks who have owned homes in Davis for years. Many of them either have no kids or their kids are grown. In other words, the exercise is largely one that is academic.

History[ edit ] View from Memorial Glade of Sather Tower The Campanile , the center of Berkeley—the ring of its bells and clock can be heard from all over campus Main article: History of the University of California, Berkeley In , the private College of California purchased the land comprising the current Berkeley campus. Because it lacked sufficient funds to operate, it eventually merged with the state-run Agricultural, Mining, and Mechanical Arts College to form the University of California, the first full-curriculum public university in the state.
Ten faculty members and almost 40 students made up the new University of California when it opened in Oakland in Billings was a trustee of the College of California and suggested that the college be named in honor of the Anglo-Irish philosopher George Berkeley. With the completion of North and South Halls in , the university relocated to its Berkeley location with male and 22 female students and held its first classes.
Yesterday’s commentary, responding to a letter talking about the need for housing that works for families, got me thinking for awhile on the need for housing for families in Davis. I can speak from personal experience here, because I am that family that needs affordable places to live in Davis.
Michael Miller , Nov. Read today’s coverage of latest discovery in The New York Times The seal is the latest and most significant treasure to emerge from the treasure-laden tomb of the Griffin Warrior, which was hailed as the most spectacular archaeological discovery in Greece in more than half a century when it was uncovered in an olive grove near the ancient city of Pylos in The remarkably undisturbed and intact grave revealed not only the well-preserved remains of what is believed to have been a powerful Mycenaean warrior or priest buried around B.
The limestone-encrusted sealstone was discovered lying face-down near the right arm of the Griffin Warrior. Courtesy of The Department of Classics, University of Cincinnati Due to the seal’s small size and veining on the stone, many of the miniature details are only clearly visible via photomicroscopy. It took conservation experts more than a year to clean the limestone-encrusted seal, say dig leaders Shari Stocker, a senior research associate in UC’s Department of Classics, and Jack Davis, the university’s Carl W.
Blegen professor of Greek archaeology and department head. It’s a spectacular find. Scholarly consensus has long theorized that mainlander Mycenaeans simply imported or robbed such riches from the affluent Minoan civilization on the large island of Crete, southeast of Pylos. Although the Minoans were culturally dominant to the Greek mainlanders, the civilization fell to the Mycenaeans around B. A UC team works to excavate the tomb of the Griffin Warrior.

Berkeley Red, White, and Bruised: Bloodied by combat, Japan’s disabled veterans were heroically cast as “heroes in white,” a term derived from the white hospital gowns that they habitually wore in public. But, after , these living casualties of war had to endure not only the trauma of battle and the unease of newly-acquired disabilities but also military occupation by the very-same foe that battered their bodies and shattered their lives. In what ways did total war and total defeat shape the Japanese disabled veteran of the Second World War?

His intact tomb, discovered by a UC-led international team, contained one of the most magnificent displays of prehistoric riches discovered in mainland Greece in the past 65 years. They led a team of 45 archaeologists and experts in various specialties as well as students during this summer’s excavations. Stocker stands in the shaft tomb the team uncovered. On the floor of the grave lay the skeleton of an adult male, stretched out on his back.
Weapons lay to his left, and jewelry to his right. Near the head and chest was a bronze sword, its ivory hilt covered in gold. A gold-hilted dagger lay beneath it. Gold cups rested on his chest and stomach, and near his neck was a perfectly preserved gold necklace with two pendants. By his right side and spread around his head were over one thousand beads of carnelian, amethyst, jasper, agate and gold.
Nearby were four gold rings, and silver cups as well as bronze bowls, cups, jugs and basins. The above describes what a University of Cincinnati-led international research team found this summer when excavating what was initially thought to be a Bronze Age house. Blegen Chair in Greek Archaeology.
