Post Nest introduced its smart thermostat in October of last year only to find that there was greater initial demand for its product than originally thought. It has taken months for supply to catch up. Essentially, the Nest thermostat should look good when you see it and manage your environment automatically in the background. Does it achieve that goal? Advertisement Nest Installation is a snap My home is relatively new; only about 8 years old and I had no problems installing the Nest. All it all, it took about 15 minutes to screw the base plate to the wall, connect the wires and attach the Nest. The device has Wi-Fi built-in, which you connect to your home network at the time of installation. You can use the Nest with secured wireless networks. Included with the Nest is a small screwdriver to assist with the installation.
Two Thermostats, One Zone
If you can’t adjust the central heating system to warm the room, consider adding an electric heater. You can conveniently mount electric heaters in walls shown above , in floors between joists , or along the baseboard. While electric heat is more expensive than gas, the heaters and materials for installation are much less expensive. Keep in mind that these are for auxiliary heat, not the main source. We recommend that you put the heater on a separate setback thermostat that automatically turns it on when you’re home and using the room.
In this article, we’ll show you how to hard-wire a heater, which means you have to run a separate circuit to the main panel.

I have 2 baseboard heaters currently connected to a rotary thermostat. I am replacing the thermostat with a programmable digital thermostat which can be wired either as single pole L1 only or double pole L1 and L2. There were 2 black wires from the load and 2 red wires from the line in the wiring diagram for the existing installation. The installation worked, but I noticed that the room is always hot.
The actual reading is 73 degrees no matter how low I set the thermostat. Apparently, only one heater is cycling or switching on and off while the other heater is on all the time. It seems to me that I should have wired it only as single pole L1 only and just left the second black wire disconnected. The instructions for the new thermostat say that only L1 is switched during normal operation.
But then, doesn’t that mean that only 1 baseboard heater is connected?

Tech Tips: Wiring 2 Heating Systems to a Thermostat
If you have single-stage electric or gas heat, and single-stage air conditioning, the terminals with wires attached on your old thermostat may be: If you have a single-stage heat pump system with electric back up heat, the terminals with wires attached on your old thermostat may be: Disconnect wires and remove base After labeling the wires, remove one wire at a time from the old thermostat base and secure it by wrapping the wire around a pencil. This will keep the wires from falling into the wall.
So my third floor is dividend into two separate one-bedroom apartments. Right now there is only one thermostat on one side. This makes things difficult because one tenant is at the mercy of the other one. The way the plumbing is set up (old steam heat) the whole floor is the same zone.
Homes like this are increasingly common. Dozens of builders are telling us this is happening. Or you can try using equipment designed for sailboats. The PassivhausA residential building construction standard requiring very low levels of air leakage, very high levels of insulation, and windows with a very low U-factor. To meet the standard, a home must have an infiltration rate no greater than 0.
The standard recommends, but does not require, a maximum design heating load of 10 W per square meter and windows with a maximum U-factor of 0.

Can I combine two thermostats into one? March 23, 7: When they installed the air conditioning, they installed another thermostat for that on the wall opposite the existing thermostat for the radiators. My question is, do I really need two separate thermostats for those? Most thermostats are quite clear about what gets wired to what and radiator heat is among the simplest – you will probably have one or at most two wires for the heat and two or three for the AC.
Just keep them separate and labeled and you shouldn’t have any trouble combining them into one unit. As far as what you have now – the radiator thermostat may not support AC, the AC thermostat will most likely support both. You may want a new thermostat to take care of both if you don’t have a programmable one as now you’ll be able to use the programming part for both heat and AC.
As for the radiators, they’re gas-heated water not steam. I wouldn’t be surprised if the dual thermostats were just a result of a lazy installer, as a bunch of other repairs were done in a somewhat halfass manner.
Yes, but if it is not zoned, you will just overheat the area with the other thermostat. Which ever thermostat is in a cooler area will make the warm area of the house warmer then you want it. If you have adjustable vents, just close down the vents in the warmer part of the house or where the thermostat is, and the cooler parts will get more heat because it will run longer to make the thermostat reach temp.
Apr 24, · Posted By: Kermitdafrog on 04/22/04 pm Neuromax, I have thought about the same project and think it can be done with two components, and maybe a little cheaper a digital “dry contact” thermostat (I already installed one on my central unit from Home Depot for under $20), and a solid-state (TTL input)relay that will handle 20 amps continuous.
